Nathan Eovaldi, Marcus Semien and Josh Jung Streaking for Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers opened a three-game series at the Detroit Tigers on Monday with several streaks in play.

The Texas Rangers are streaking in more ways than one going into Memorial Day’s series opener at the Detroit Tigers.

Despite having a four-game winning streak snapped in Sunday’s 3-2 loss at the Baltimore Orioles, the Rangers have won three consecutive series and five in a row on the road. American League West-leading Texas (33-19) is 4-2 on the current nine-game road trip that winds up this week in Detroit.

A pair of infielders are also on hitting streaks that are the best in their careers, while Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is on a historic roll.

Second baseman Marcus Semien extended his hitting streak to 17 on Sunday, tying the longest of his career. He hit safely in 17 straight with the Oakland Athletics in 2019. Semien’s streak currently also tops the AL and is tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman for the longest in the Majors.

Semien’s run is also the longest for the Rangers this season. Since it began, he’s hitting .320 with three home runs, two triples, four doubles, 15 RBI and 17 runs. Semien has hits in 23 of 24 games in May at .330/.391/.524/.916, along with a 25-game on-base streak.

Across the infield, third baseman Josh Jung is working on a career-best 11-game hit streak. The rookie has hits in 15 of his last 16 games at .359. It’s tied for the sixth-longest hitting streak for a Rangers rookie and the longest since Andy Ibáñez also hit in 11 straight in 2021. Elvis Andrus owns the rookie record at 16 in 2009.

Eovaldi (6-2, 2.60) is on a five-game winning streak and has pitched at least five innings in all 10 starts this season. Over his last five starts, Eovaldi is 4-0 with a 0.86 ERA (four earned runs over 41 2/3 innings.

The last pitcher to allow four or fewer runs over five starts and at least 41 2/3 innings was the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw in 2016. The last AL pitcher to do it was Detroit’s Justin Verlander in 2011.

Detroit starting is starting Matthew Boyd (3-3, 5.74), with first pitch at Comerica Park scheduled for 12:10 p.m. CT.
