Texas Rangers Non-Tender Deadline News and Updates

Keep track of everything going on with the Rangers before the non-tender deadline at 7:00 p.m. CT on Monday night.

8:24 a.m.: Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported Monday morning that the Rangers will tender contracts to all of their arbitration-eligible players.

Not surprising, but passing info on nonetheless: Being told Rangers are expected to tender contracts to all arb-eligible players by this evening's 7 pm CT deadline.

That list: Mazara, Gallo, Santana, DeShields, Rafael Montero.

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise. It doesn’t rule out potential trades later on this winter, but the Rangers will maintain club control over these players.

11:03 a.m.: Nick Goody has accepted his assignment and has officially been added to the 40-man roster.

RHP Nick Goody has accepted his assignment to the Rangers and has been added to the Major League roster. Goody was claimed on release waivers from Cleveland on November 26 and had 5 days to accept or reject the assignment. He was 3-2, 3.54 in 39 games w/CLE in 2019. Roster at 40.

With the 40-man roster now full, a subsequent move will have to be made to make room for Kyle Gibson. The Rangers could trade or designate a player for assignment to make room. They could also non-tender someone on their roster to open up a spot for Gibson. Gibson's signing should be made official sometime this week.

1:50 p.m.: The Rangers claimed another relief pitcher off of waivers.

Rangers have acquired RHP Jimmy Herget on a waiver claim from Cincinnati. He made 5 relief appearances with Reds in ML debut in 2019. LHP Jeffrey Springs has been designated for assignment to make room on 40-man roster.

Jimmy Herget made five relief appearances for the Reds in 2019, with a 4.26 ERA in 6.1 innings. His rookie status is still intact.

It's a little surprising that Jeffrey Springs is the first player the Rangers designated for assignment or non-tendered today. The Rangers are already lacking with left-handed relievers and potentially losing Springs gives Texas one less lefty to compete for a spot in the bullpen.

5:14 p.m.: The Texas Rangers officially announced they have signed Nick Goody to a 1-year, $915,000 contract, avoiding arbitration.

All in one day, Nick Goody accepts his assignment and agrees to a contract with the Rangers. The $915,000 value is $185,000 less than the $1.1 million he was projected in arbitration. He will be a top candidate for the Rangers' bullpen in 2020.

7:04 p.m.: The Texas Rangers announce they declined to tender contract offers to Ian Gibaut and Wei-Chieh Huang. There are now two open spots on the 40-man roster. T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com also reported it may not be the end of their tenure with the Rangers.

Gibaut and Huang now become free agents but the Rangers are planning to try and re-sign both to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Same as rhey did with Adrian Sampson last year

One of the open roster spots is surely for Kyle Gibson, which is expected to be announced some time this week.

Now that the non-tender deadline has passed, the Rangers prepare for the Winter Meetings with an open roster spot. This is where the fun begins.
