Newly Acquired Speedster Reportedly May Miss Significant Time For Red Sox

It sounds like it'll take a while for one of Boston's newest additions to make his debut

The Boston Red Sox are set to kick off the 2023 campaign, but won't have one of their newest players on the field.

Boston acquired speedster Adalberto Mondesí from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for left-handed reliever Josh Taylor this past offseason. The 27-year-old has shown impressive upside so far throughout his career but has been hampered by a plethora of injuries.

Mondesí has played in just 50 games over the last two seasons and reportedly may miss a significant amount of time to open the 2023 season as well as he continues to recover after suffering a torn ACL, according to the Boston Globe's Julian McWilliams.

"To add to this, it appears as if Adalberto Mondesi (ACL) will move to the 60-day IL to free up space for Tapia on the 40-man roster," McWilliams said. "Nothing final, but that’s where it’s trending."

The shortstop should play a major role with Boston in 2023, but it sounds like it might be a while before he's able to take the field at Fenway Park. Mondesí is an intriguing talent. He is a seven-year veteran and has game-changing speed. Mondesí led the league in triples with 10 in 102 games in 2019 and steals with 24 in 59 games in 2020.

Injuries certainly have had a major impact on his career and the 102 games played in 2019 are his career-high. A move to the 60-day injured list would pave the way for outfielder Raimel Tapia to make the club without Boston having to designate any player for assignment. If Mondesí is moved to the 60-day injured list it would take them out of game action until at least April or May.

Hopefully, Mondesí isn't forced to miss much more time than that and will make his debut at Fenway Park sooner rather than later.
