Red Sox's Adam Duvall 'Couldn't Be Happier' With Wrist Fracture Recovery

Duvall is on pace to return to the Red Sox on Friday

The Boston Red Sox have been missing a vital piece of the roster for the majority of the season but are set to gain a valuable reinforcement in the coming days.

Red Sox center fielder Adam Duvall has been out since April 9, when he attempted to make a diving catch and fractured his wrist. Heading into the injury, the right-handed slugger was hitting .455 (15-for-33) with 10 extra-base hits including four home runs, 14 RBIs and a 1.544 OPS in eight games. He appeared to be one of the best players in baseball prior to the injury.

I sat down with Duvall and was able to gain some insight into his injury as well as his rehab progress.

"You know it feels good," Duvall said, in reference to his wrist. "Surprisingly, the turnaround with playing a couple of games in a row, then having an off day and then playing three seven-inning games, my body has felt great. So, I couldn't be happier with where I'm at from a rehab standpoint and I'm really looking forward to getting back and joining the team."

Duvall also detailed the brutal timeline between the dive itself and getting his diagnosis of a wrist fracture after tests were performed. The 34-year-old slugger suffered a severe wrist sprain last season that ended his season prematurely. There was some concern that he may have suffered the same injury; in that regard, he somewhat lucked out.

"When it happened, I wasn't sure what was going on with the wrist because I obviously had surgery last year on it," Duvall said. "I wasn't sure if it was the same thing. That's kind of what was going through my mind when it initially happened. But I think, like you said, it was kind of the best-case scenario as far as the injury that it ended up being which was a broken wrist."

While the first few months as a member of the Red Sox have featured some highs and lows, Duvall is ready to get back into the swing of things.

"I've had June 9 circled on the calendar for a while now, and barring any setbacks or anything in these next couple of games, that's the target date. Hopefully, we'll hit that."

Duvall is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on Friday, and is expected to make his return immediately.

Duvall also gave an in-depth explanation about his Type 1 diabetes management alongside Tandem Diabetes Care, and how the t:slim X2 insulin pump has made it easier to keep his insulin levels in check.
