Struggling Red Sox Hurler To Paternity List, Veteran Southpaw Takes His Spot

Boston makes a temporary pitching change ahead a Fenway homestand

A right-hander embracing a new role will be out for a few days before making his first bullpen appearance.

The Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday night that Corey Kluber will miss some time after being placed on the paternity list.

The club brought him in this past offseason to recreate the success he found with the Cleveland Guardians but after a rocky start, the veteran was recently taken out of the rotation.

Kluber posted a 6.26 ERA with a 34-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .269 batting average against in 41 2/3 innings pitched for the nine games he took the mound for the Red Sox this year.

Upon his return from paternity leave, Kluber will be joining the bullpen in an effort to combat his age and continue to contribute to the team.

Taking his place in the interim will be Ryan Sherriff, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester to fill Kluber's void.

While in Worcester this year, Sherriff posted a 2.79 ERA with a 21-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .208 batting average against in 19 1/3 innings pitched.

On paper, the swap of Kluber for Sherriff is close to a lateral move. No timetable for Kluber’s return has been announced by the team yet but paternity leave typically is only a few days.
