Gamethread: White Sox at Mariners

The hits keep coming: Tim Anderson leads the American League with a .333 batting average. Anderson went 2-for-5 yesterday to build on his strong season. (Clinton Cole/South Side Hit Pen)
After a disappointing 1-2 series against the hapless Royals (55-92), the White Sox (64-82) are off to Seattle for a three-game series against the Mariners (60-86). For the folks who are interested in tanking, if the season ended today, the Mariners would have the sixth pick in the 2020 draft, while the White Sox would have the ninth pick.
Dylan Covey, 28, will start on the mound for the White Sox. Covey's most recent outing was a forgettable one, as he got rocked by the Angels in an 8-7 loss on Saturday. In that game, Covey allowed seven runs (all earned) in only two and two-thirds innings. It has been a rough season for Covey, as he enters with a 7.69 ERA, 6.15 FIP, 5.60 xFIP, and -0.1 fWAR in 55 innings.
Yusei Kikuchi, another 28-year-old pitcher, will start for the Mariners. Kikuchi pitched admirably in eight excellent seasons in Japan, posting a 2.77 ERA, but he is having a disappointing rookie season in the majors. Kikuchi enters this game with a 5.24 ERA, 5.76 FIP, 5.11 xFIP, and 0.2 fWAR in 149 1/3 innings. Kikuchi has pitched against the White Sox once this season, and that was the Home Opener, which I was at. In that game, Kikuchi allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings.

The game is out west, so it is no surprise that we will have a late start (9:10 CST). WGN will televise it, and as usual, WGN 720 will have the radio coverage. Time to get our 65th win.
