A recent report by Shams Charania of The Athletic claims that Chicago Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball may finally return to the court in early 2023. If and when that happens, it will mark a tremendous development for the Bulls, who are feeling the effects of their ace guard's absence from the lineup since January 2022.

Cautious optimism

Charania wrote that "the franchise has been hopeful of his return to action at some point after the calendar flips to 2023, sources said." The road from having surgery on his troublesome left knee in late September to recovery, rehabilitation, and eventual return is still long for Ball, and the Bulls organization is treating the news with cautious optimism.

The team has not yet set an official target date for Ball's return, but encouraging signs have emerged from his rehabilitation program in recent weeks. Still, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan tempered expectations and set the record straight regarding Ball's status.

Needed boost in the backcourt

Although sophomore guard Ayo Dosunmu and reserves Goran Dragic and Coby White have all done an admirable job leading the backcourt in Ball's extended absence, the Bulls have missed his playmaking abilities, ballhandling skills, shooting prowess, and defensive versatility.

As one of the most dynamic guards in the league, Ball's return would provide a much-needed boost to the Bulls' offense and give them the edge they need to make their way up the Eastern Conference standings. Chicago has had a disjointed start to this season with a 9-11 record, although they've recently gained momentum with morale-boosting victories over the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Utah Jazz.
