Carlik Jones, the 2023 G-League MVP, has been waived by the Chicago Bulls.

The development has been announced by the team through its social media platforms.

Waiving Jones did not only free up the Bulls’ crowded point guard spot, but it also kept the team from going over the luxury tax.

The 25-year-old Jones signed with the Bulls in the summer of 2022. About $250,000 of his non-guaranteed contract would've been guaranteed on opening night.

Guard-heavy lineup

Before he was released, Jones was one of four Bulls’ point guards. He was competing with Coby White, Jevon Carter, and Ayo Dosunmu.

Chicago also has Lonzo Ball as a playmaker but he is expected to miss the entire season after undergoing knee surgery.

Unless another team will pick him up, there’s a big possibility that Jones will return to the Windy City Bulls.

Stellar run in the G-League

The American/South Sudanese player had a solid showing for Windy City in last year’s G-League season where he averaged 20.3 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.4 rebounds en route to winning the MVP award.

The 6-foot Jones, who started his NBA career as an undrafted player with the Dallas Mavericks, played seven games for the Bulls last season, averaging 2.9 points, 0.9 assists, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.3 steals in just eight minutes of playing time per contest.

Jones was also superb in the recent FIBA World Cup where he helped South Sudan earn a trip to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Jones flirted with what could have been the first triple-double in World Cup history when he notched 26 points, 15 assists, and seven rebounds in South Sudan’s 101-78 win over Angola.
