Former New York Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy is joining the Boston Celtics in a senior consultant role assisting on all basketball operations matters, not just coaching. The Celtics reportedly considered adding him to Joe Mazzulla's coaching staff back in July.

In 11 seasons as an NBA head coach, Van Gundy worked for the Knicks and later the Houston Rockets, but he is best known for his time leading New York.

The 61-year-old coached the Knicks for seven seasons and guided the team to a solid 248-172 regular-season record during this span. Also, New York reached the playoffs in six consecutive seasons under his leadership and made it all the way to the NBA Finals in 1999.

Shortly after his time as the head coach of the Rockets came to an end, Van Gundy joined ESPN in 2007 as an NBA analyst. He worked there for 16 years before the company laid him off in the summer of 2023.
