Former Celtic, EuroLeague Star Announces Retirement

Luigi Datome appeared in 18 games with the Boston Celtics during the 2014-15 regular season.

Former Boston Celtics forward and fan favorite Luigi Datome is retiring from the game of basketball following his stint playing for Italy in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Datome, 35, averaged 5.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.4 blocks per game in 18 appearances with the storied Celtics franchise during the 2014-15 regular season.

The 6-foot-8 forward accomplished a whole lot during his time playing basketball overseas. He won the Lega Basket Serie A MVP award in 2017, the Turkish Super Cup MVP in 2017, and the Italian Basketball Cup MVP in 2021. Additionally, Datome was a two-time member of the EuroLeague's prestigious 50-40-90 club.

Datome's stint with the Celtics may have been brief and unspectacular, but he should still be remembered as one of the greatest Italian-born players ever to play the game of basketball.
