Miami Heat vs. Chicago Bulls Takeaways: Heat Unable To Overcome 25-Point Deficit

In this story:
Despite fighting back from a 25-point deficit in the opening quarter, the Miami Heat fell short to the Chicago Bulls on Thursday evening, 124-116.
Here’s a look at five major takeaways:
1. The Bulls hot start was too much to overcome.
Miami did not lead during the entire game, largely due to Chicago's 36-point first quarter. After shrinking their lead to four points at halftime, they lacked the offensive firepower to come out victorious. Tyler Herro's absence is more apparent than ever because the Heat could not match their scoring tempo. He is expected to return by the end of December.
2. Defense is the Heat's biggest weakness until Bam Adebayo and Haywood Highsmith return.
Against the Hornets, their lack of defensive prowess was insignificant due to Charlotte's underwhelming offense. However, the opening quarter exposed the glaring holes in Miami's defensive unit. Not to mention, Bulls center Nikola Vucevic scored 24 points, along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Whether it's a lack of communication or ability, they must learn to perform without their top defenders.
3. Miami's balanced attack proved ineffective.
Despite five players scoring more than 15 points, the Heat were outmatched on the offensive end. Rising star Jaime Jaquez Jr. led the way with 22 points, while Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin, and Kyle Lowry combined for 54 points and 21 rebounds.
4. The Heat are struggling to contain backcourt scoring.
Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier recorded 34 and 28 points in their back-to-back contests earlier this week. It was much the same issue with Chicago guard Coby White. White finished with 26 points and 11 assists on 45 percent shooting.
5. Coach Erik Spoelstra made major adjustments early on.
Following the poor start on the defensive end, Spoelstra made changes. These included Jamal Cain and R.J. Hampton receiving playing time in the first quarter. Spoelstra and the Heat are lacking roster consistency due to their plethora of injuries. If they want to find success in the playoffs, health is crucial.
