Would Donovan Mitchell Solve The Miami Heat’s Problems?

In this story:
No, Cleveland Cavaliers star guard Donovan Mitchell would not fix the Miami Heat’s issues.
Here’s why:
Mitchell was vaulted further into trade rumors following injuries to co-stars Darius Garland and Evan Mobley. These losses are likely going to drop Cleveland in the Eastern Conference standings.
The All-Star guard is a prominent scorer in the NBA, most notably recording 71 points last season against the Chicago Bulls. However, outside of scoring, he provides similar production to Heat guard Tyler Herro.
This year, Mitchell is averaging 5.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.9 steals on 45.5 percent shooting and 34.5 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, Herro’s numbers are five rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.4 steals a game on 44.7 percent shooting and 41 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite their comparable stats, Mitchell has appeared in 20 games to Herro’s eight. This is perhaps the biggest difference between the star guards. Herro has dealt with injuries since entering the league in the 2019 NBA draft.
“If the Cavs’ season is to be derailed by these two lengthy injuries to key players, the rest of the league will immediately turn toward the shores of Lake Erie to see if Mitchell is available even earlier,” Charania and Vardon wrote.
If Miami cannot acquire Mitchell without losing Herro, then they should seek other moves to improve their roster.
