Terry Rozier Has Been Mentoring This Hornets Rookie
The dynamic between veterans and rookies in the NBA has always been an important one. Young guys can be full of energy and natural talent, but at the end of the day, having seasoned vets who can provide guidance in a multitude of ways will be crucial to rookie players' success.
One of the few players over age 28 on Charlotte's roster is Terry Rozier, who is entering his ninth season in the league and his fifth with the Hornets. As his role matures into that of a leader and a guiding presence, he has been sure to take younger players under his wing. One of those players is 2023 first-round pick Nick Smith Jr.
When asked about Smith after the Hornets' preseason win over the Thunder on Sunday, Rozier was quick to complement the rookie's work ethic. "He plays hard, he tries to learn every day," said Rozier. "I try to talk to him as much as I can. I can tell he watches me a lot."
This is something that has certainly not gone unnoticed by the 19-year old guard. During media availability this week, Smith noted that Rozier's presence throughout the summer has played a big part in helping him be ready for the upcoming season.
"He always comes to work with a sense of urgency and a sense of trying to get better each and every day," said Smith. "Whether it's helping the team, helping himself, or even just teaching us where to be in certain spots."
It is that intentionality in setting an example by Rozier that can help a rookie like Smith enjoy a smooth transition to life in the NBA. The former University of Arkansas standout knows that he has the support of his veteran leader every step of the way.
Terry Rozier has clearly been going above and beyond to be a mentor and a leader to the Hornets' younger players. While Nick Smith voiced that he appreciates this effort, he also commented that it did not surprise him, either.
"I know a lot of guys that don't do it," said Smith. "But he's one of the guys that does it, so I respect that about him."
