For the group stage, teams were placed into different groups based on their performance during the 2022-2023 season. This was done by randomly drawing teams from different "Pots" as a way to determine their seeding. Here are the groups that were drawn:
Group A: 76ers, Cavs, Hawks, Pacers, Pistons
Group B: Bucks, Knicks, Heat, Wizards, Hornets
Group C: Celtics, Nets, Raptors, Bulls, Magic
Among the Eastern Conference groups, Group B is expected to be the most challenging and has been nicknamed the "Group of Death." The Heat had a less successful regular season in 2022-2023 but managed to reach the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks are likely to add another high-caliber player to their roster, and the Bucks remain strong after retaining key players like Middleton and Lopez during the offseason. The Wizards are projected to be the weakest team in the group after trading their All-Star player Bradley Beal. However, they still have respectable players such as Jordan Poole, Kyle Kuzma, and Tyus Jones.
The NBA Cup will begin in November and conclude with the semifinals and finals held in Las Vegas in early December. The Cup represents Charlotte's best opportunity to win a championship due to the "one-off" knockout format, which introduces more unpredictability compared to a traditional seven-game playoff series.
