The Utah Jazz made some headlines this morning as reports surfaced of Kai Sotto, the 2022 & 2023 Fan MVP of Australia’s highly regarded basketball league, the NBL. No, he didn’t exactly win the league MVP, more so, he won the popularity contest two years in a row. While he’s generated success in terms of hype and fan appeal, he’s just getting started in terms of his quality as a player.

Sotto, the 21-year-old, lengthy, 7 ‘3 center from the Phillippines actually entered his name in the 2022 NBA Draft. However, his name was uncalled on draft night, leading to his return back to the NBL, where he would once again show his impact. He averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds.

The news was first reported by Homer Sayson of SPIN.ph describing Sotto’s incoming workout in Utah:

Tony Ronzone of powerhouse agency Wasserman Sports toldSPIN.ph that Kai Sotto will be among those who will participate in the Utah Jazz NBA mini-camp from May 30 and 31...“Kai is already working out in Los Angeles and he will leave for Utah on the 29th,” Ronzone said.

The Jazz’s pending free agency of big men Udoka Azubuike and Damian Jones could see scouts look outside of the norms to acquire some depth. The Jazz’s mini-camp will be present with a variety of current and former players from both the NBA and overseas. This will be as good a time as ever for Sotto to generate some interest from the league.

If signed by the Jazz or another franchise, it could lead to Sotto becoming the first full-blooded Filipino to play in the league; a potentially massive moment for the country. Next week, we’ll see if he has what it takes in order to make the next jump in his professional basketball career.
