While the NBA regular season may still be in motion, it's never too early to look ahead to what the summer holds for a few teams around the association. One of those squads happens to be the Sacramento Kings, whose roster sits in an interesting position with around 20 games to go in the year.

The Kings have managed to earn a record of 33-25 at the end of February, good for 8th place in the West. Their record is similar to what this team saw last season with a similar roster, but their drop in prestige amongst their conference has inevitably led to questions about what the ceiling is for Sacramento once we hit the playoffs. If this group isn't able to reach steeper heights than we saw a season ago, it could lead to some critical decisions for the roster on deck from this front office.

NBA insider Shams Charania dove into what to expect from Sacramento as we inch closer to this summer on FanDuel's Run It Back, detailing some key information on what may be to come for the Kings across the coming months:

"This season just feels different. Record-wise they're pretty similar to where they were last year, but they're not a home court team right now, not a team that's a shoo-in for the playoffs. They're in the Play-In tournament, even though they have a similar record, I think that speaks to the Western Conference. That's the tenor of the season for the Kings, and they knew going into the year they would be aggressive when they had opportunities. They were essentially runner-ups for Pascal Siakam... The Kings have been opportunistic, they'll continue to be... They have assets that they can move, tradable contracts, so I think going into this summer, you have to keep an eye on the Kings."

This roster has an established and talented core to work with, headlined by 2023 All-Stars De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis alongside rising star Keegan Murray. Still, the work around the edges is what will take this team from a good one to a true championship contender.

Armed with a few rotational players on moveable contracts next to a great majority of the draft capital, you can see the potential route for the Kings to make a splash if the right player were available on the trade market. They got extremely close in their pursuit of Pascal Siakam, and they'll have their chance on a similar caliber of player once the draft and free agency begin to shake out. As to who that player may be, it remains to be seen

Of course, there's still time for the Kings to salvage the hopes of this season. However, if things fall short in the postseason, expect this team to be diligent and aggressive in their roster construction process over the offseason approaching.
