3 Worthy Free Agent Candidates To Fill Out Kings’ Final Roster Spot

In this story:
The Sacramento Kings are wrapping up a surprisingly busy off-season as they head into training camp in a few weeks. The recent signing of C JaVale McGee gives fans the impression that the Kings have their roster figured out, but the waiving of C Nerlens Noel and C Neemias Queta gives Sacramento one open roster spot.
The Kings had the opportunity to give their last roster spot to young G Jordan Ford, but they signed him to their final two-way deal instead. With all three two-way spots filled and only 14 rostered players, who will the Kings bring in to fill out the roster?
All NBA teams can have up to 21 players for training camp, so if the Kings sign someone, keep in mind that they might not last until opening day.
Sacramento will likely bring multiple players into training camp to compete for the final roster spot, but here are a few free agents that the Kings should certainly look into:
Kelly Oubre Jr.
The best remaining free agent on the market, F Kelly Oubre Jr. All off-season, Kings fans have advocated for Sacramento to give Oubre an opportunity, yet he remains on the market.
The talented 6'7" wing has almost everything you want out of a player, except he struggles with his jump shot and decision-making. Shooting a career 33% from deep on 4.7 attempts per game, Oubre has not found consistency from the three-point line.
Oubre, 27, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career with the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Whether it is contract disagreements or a slim market for inefficient wings, it is shocking he has not found a new home yet.
The Kings, if Oubre is willing to take a pay cut, could give him a bench position on a winning team. Oubre has not made a playoff appearance since 2018 with the Washington Wizards and could be interested in helping Sacramento make a championship push.
Oubre's two-way versatility is hard to pass up if the opportunity arises for the Kings front office, but his asking price will likely be too much.
Daishen Nix
G Daishen Nix, 21, is one of the youngest players available in free agency. The former 5-star point guard was a top 15 player in the country coming out of high school, but his career has not taken off as expected.
Nix started his professional career with G League Ignite before going undrafted in 2021 and getting picked up by the Houston Rockets. In his rookie year with the Rockets' G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Nix impressively averaged 20.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 2.1 steals with 48/39/59 shooting splits.
While Nix's game has not translated to the NBA level, the talent is undoubtedly there. The 6'5" point guard has untapped potential and would be a serious threat as a third-string point guard in Sacramento.
Nix could learn a lot playing behind All-Star G De'Aaron Fox, but his inexperience might not be what the Kings are looking for with their final roster spot. The young guard would still be worth bringing in for training camp.
George Hill
Opposite of Nix, G George Hill could provide experience to the Kings bench. Hill, 37, could be exactly what the Kings are looking for in a third-string point guard.
Hill is a 15-year NBA veteran and could play a similar role on the 2023-24 Kings squad as G Matthew Dellavedova did in Sacramento last season. Having a veteran bench presence practicing alongside two young point guards in Fox and G Davion Mitchell could help them progress.
Although Hill is nearing retirement, he still can come into the game and produce when necessary. In the 2022-23 season, Hill split time between the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers, averaging 5.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in just 18.1 minutes per game.
The Kings would not need 18 minutes per game out of Hill, but he would play more of a veteran bench presence role. Hill might be their guy if the Kings are looking for a veteran point guard to come in and provide when needed.
