It’s been almost two weeks since the Los Angeles Lakers season came to a halt and the news of the possible LeBron James retirement came into play. Now, many around the game don’t truly believe that James will actually hang up his sneakers, in part because the competitive drive is still there. He scored 40 points in the game four loss to the Denver Nuggets that saw the Lakers season come to a close. Clearly, he can still play and play at a high level at that.

James isn’t the type to walk away silently. He has been the subject of attention for the better part of his life so the likelihood of him just sinking into the distance is extremely low. All signs point to him being back on the court for his 21st season and more than likely wearing the purple and gold.

He has talked about his desire to play with his son, Bronny, multiple times over the last few years and while he may have softened on that stance of late, surely it’s still on his mind. Bronny James will be attending USC in the fall and after one season with the Trojans, he can join the NBA. The dream of playing on the court at the professional level with his son is almost within his reach so the idea of James giving that up, is unlikely.

More so, he was frustrated from being swept after such a grueling season. Lost in all the success that the post trade deadline squad had were some dark times early on in the year. The Lakers started 2-10 and they had to battle all year, just to make the play-in. James is also the ultimate competitor so human nature kicked in and he likely felt defeated in that moment.

When the 2023-2034 NBA season kicks off, expect James back with the Lakers. Banner number 18 is the goal for the team and individually, James can add even more accomplishments to his legendary resume.
