Lakers News: LA Role Player Putting In Offseason Work With Top Assistant

The road to next season is beginning early.

The NBA season may run from October to April for most teams, but the job of being a player in the best basketball league in the world certainly isn't part time -- not if you want to maximize your chances to be the best player you can be.

Los Angeles Lakers role player Jarred Vanderbilt is taking that message to heart.

The 24-year-old power forward worked out with top LA assistant Phil Handy in preparation for his second season in purple and gold, as he's trying to build on a successful debut in Los Angeles.

Vanderbilt proved himself to be a solid contributor off the bench for LA after being acquired at the trade deadline, as he was a good defender with a penchant for hitting the glass, averaging 7.5 rebounds per contest last season and just under seven a game with the Lakers.

As for what he could improve on though, his offensive game is somewhat limited in today's game as he shot 30 percent from three last season. If he could raise that a touch, he could be a valuable floor spacer for the Lakers next year as part of what should be a deep second unit.

Notably, the Lakers acquired Taurean Prince and Jaxson Hayes this offseason, and Vanderbilt with an improved three point shot would pair with them well as part of a big LA lineup.

But as it stands, the trio should be excellent defensively and Vanderbilt will play a big part in that.

One issue with the Lakers last season -- even after they completely reshaped their roster at the deadline -- was that they were vulnerable in the half-court on defense.

Vanderbilt was the exception to that rule, and he should have a quality second season with the team, especially with the work he's putting in early when the bright lights aren't shining.
