Lakers News: Darvin Ham Vows To Re-Think Lineups After OT Loss To Kings

After a rough 132-127 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham had this to say about his rotations per Dan Woike of the LA Times:
“My rotation, we got to really dig into that and really figure out and really take a close look … so guys are in rhythm,” Ham said. “We have a great collection of players. And I played in this league. When you know when you’re going in and who you’re playing with, that matters. So buckling down on our rotation, I’ll start there. That definitely is the main thing that’s on my mind.”
Evidently, Ham has taken accountability for what has definitely been a glaring issue for the Lakers to start the season off. Woike adds that "through three games, 10 different five-man lineups have played at least five minutes with another nine playing at least three."
Across 3 games, those figures are far too large, as for context, Sacramento has only had 5 lineups play 5 or more minutes this season.
There are a few ways to adjust this problem, leading Ham to be be asked "if his changes would consist of tightening his rotations or being more rigid with substitution patterns."
To that, Ham said, "I think it’s a little bit of all that. A little mixture of all of that.”
Major lineup adjustments are likely in order for the Lakers, ranging from potentially the starting lineup down to the bench rotation. The Lakers are deep, and when you have a number of quality players, it's easy to put the right/wrong players in at the wrong times.
This was an issue last spring as well after the deadline, as an influx of new players impacted Darvin Ham's ability to determine which lineups were optimal. With some time, however, things got better come playoff time. Expect something similar now.
