In this story:

The NBA has seen plenty of talented players over the years, and one of the best types of debates is the player comparisons. It is a discussion that has been had over time and continues to this day.

Looking at how some of the best players in the league compared to those of the older eras is a fun way to look at the league and see how it has grown. It also gives some look into how history repeats itself within the players, and possibly what we can expect going forward.

Recently, Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report made some fascinating Hall-of-Fame comparisons for some of the best young players in the NBA today, and one player reminds them of a Los Angeles Lakers legend.

Swartz described San Antonio Spurs rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama as a perimeter-oriented Kareem Abdul-Jabber. That is quite the comparison for the highly touted rookie, but one that does make some sense.

“When looking for a Hall-of-Fame comp, Abdul-Jabbar most closely fits the bill with his similar size, massive wingspan and ability to control a game on both ends of the court. Abdul-Jabbar stood 7'2" and weighed in at 225 pounds, not far off from Wembanyama's 7'4", 209-pound frame. Unless he develops a sky hook (could you imagine??), Wembanyama's offensive skill set is noticeably different from Abdul-Jabbar's, of course.”

Per Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report

Wembanyama has the ability to step outside the paint and knock down threes at a high rate. His frame is a little light right now, but he could add some weight over time to make himself even scarier down in the painted area.

“Imagine if someone Abdul-Jabbar's size could handle the ball like a guard, attack off the dribble and shoot fadeaway threes at will. This is what Wembanyama could be now.”

Per Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report

If Wembanyama has anywhere near the career that Abdul-Jabber had, it would be seen as a major success. This is high praise to even be compared to the Lakers legend, but one that could prove to be justified if the rookie can live up to his potential this season.
