Lakers News: Reporter Explains Why Free Agent D'Angelo Russell Is Likely To Remain In LA

Should they bring D'Lo back?

The case of D'Angelo Russell is a curious one. When the Lakers traded for him at the trade deadline, it was a seen as a great move. Russell then proceeded to play well for the team, helping them get to the Western Conference Finals but that's when it all fell apart. Before the Conference Finals, it was looked at as a forgone conclusion that he would be back in LA next season.

He struggled in their series against the Denver Nuggets and now his future with LA is in question. His 6.2 points per game average in the four games against Denver really hurt the team and ultimately they were swept. Russell wasn't the sole blame for the loss but his free agency is now an interesting one to watch. Insider John Hollinger of The Athletic projects Russell to likely be back with the team despite all the struggles.

"I get it if you’re a bit underwhelmed by the idea of Russell in a high-stakes postseason game, but the Lakers could do a lot worse than bringing him back. I should note that his contract also offers sign-and-trade possibilities if the Lakers go looking for upgrades."

Per The Athletic

Hollinger is projecting Russell to get $26.8 million this offseason, which is seen as a bit high. But he does point out that Russell did play well for the Lakers up until the final four games.

While this is true, the Lakers should avoid paying him that much. With the struggles, I believe anywhere between $17-$20 million would be a fair amount for him. It was only a four game sample size so we can't base everything off that but when the lights were brightest, he folded.

Being a Laker means that can't happen. It's a championship or bust mentality at all times and Russell didn't have it for that series. Now, I won't knock him fully since it was the farthest that he had ever gone in the postseason but expectations were there.

Russell presents a good option for the Lakers next season to surround LeBron James and Anthony Davis due to his shooting ability and ability to play off and on the ball. Unless a star point guard becomes available, the team should do what they can to retain Russell this offseason.
