Lakers News: Lonzo Ball Describes Signature Shoe Debacle During Early Tenure in LA

In this story:
The Los Angeles Lakers community always shows love to former players even if they didn't necessarily pan out with their franchise. Lonzo Ball was selected number two by the franchise back in 2017 and the hype around him was as much as any phenom in recent history. Magic Johnson was requesting that he leave behind just a couple of his records and he was being poised as the hometown hero that would return the purple and gold back to greatness.
Unfortunately, once LeBron James signed with the franchise, there was little time for Ball to develop into the star they had envisioned him to become and LA dealt him away as part of a bigger package to land Anthony Davis.
Nonetheless, the Chino Hills native still had some special moments with the franchise and he certainly showed flashes of becoming a top-tier point guard in the league. Ball was able to record a triple-double in the same game as James, dropped 29 points in just his second-career game and also took home summer league MVP in 2017.
He looked very comfortable as the summer league went on but it did not start that way. Ball revealed in the past that when he debuted his signature 'ZO2 Big Baller Brand' prototype sneakers, they were not ready to be worn at all and contributed to poor play off the start.
The 25-year-old guard appeared on Trae Young's 'From The Point' podcast recently and confirmed the details once again.
"I played the first two games with prototypes, it wasn't the official shoe yet," said Ball. "I was playing in those and they were just ripping every quarter. DMO was in the stands bringing me shoes and I was just like 'Yo, they're not ready yet.'"

Ball went on to play in a number of different shoes in the games following that and definitely played his best when wearing Kobe's. He also showed a lot of love to Big Baller Brand during the podcast and paid respects to his family for trying something that hadn't been done before.
