Mavs Among Top-25 Most Profitable Pro Sports Teams; Cowboys No. 1

The Dallas Cowboys generate the most operating income out of any professional sports team in the world, and the Dallas Mavericks aren’t too far behind them on the list.

The Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys might not always be among the most competitive teams in the NBA and NFL respectively, but one thing is for sure: owners Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones have no issues profiting from their franchises.

Forbes recently released a list of the most profitable professional teams in the world, and not surprisingly, the Cowboys came in at No. 1.

“The Dallas Cowboys head the list. The only sports team on the planet worth $8 billion pocketed $1.17 billion in operating income the past three years,” Mike Ozanian wrote.

On the list, which consisted of 25 teams, the Mavs came in at No 16 with a three-year total operating income of $282 million. Cuban’s club was the fifth-ranked NBA team on the list, behind only the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks.

The meteoric rise of Luka Doncic likely has a lot to do with the Mavs being as profitable as they’ve been over the last handful of years. Not to say they wouldn’t be making money regardless, but having one of the most popular athletes on the planet on your roster definitely helps. Doncic, who is still just 24 years old, now has four All-NBA First Team selections on his resume in just five seasons.

The Mavs will likely never catch up with the Cowboys’ worldwide popularity and profitability, but they can make up some ground in the next three years if they do a better job of building a title-contending team around Doncic. That process starts in a little less than three weeks, as the Mavs have the No. 10 pick in the NBA Draft, followed by free agency a week after that, where they hope to re-sign star guard Kyrie Irving.
