The Dallas Mavericks could look to trade for LeBron James from the Los Angeles Lakers if The King wishes to move on from Anthony Davis.

The road for the Dallas Mavericks to land LeBron James in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers may be long, but a significant step forward could come.

According to CBS Sports, James is reportedly "over" his partnership with Anthony Davis - meaning he is maybe “done” with him - a result of James being  "frustrated" with AD’s work ethic. This could mean that James, 38, would look for a new team this offseason ... and the Mavs could be a top candidate considering his former teammate Kyrie Irving has recruited him to Dallas in recent weeks.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Irving reached out to his former championship teammate a few weeks ago to gauge his interest in joining the Mavs.

"Kyrie Irving has reached out to Lakers star LeBron James in attempts to see if James would come to Dallas," Charania reported. "Irving is a free agent this offseason."

If James decides that he wants to stay in L.A., then that could potentially mean the Lakers moving on from Davis instead. Would the Mavs be interested in taking on Davis given that his trade value isn’t nearly what it used to be? There has been some smoke there too, according to a report from Fox Sports Radio's Colin Cowherd.

“They can’t depend on Anthony Davis. They’re a little upset that Darvin Ham is not keeping the pressure on Anthony Davis," Cowherd said on his podcast in February. "I talked to an NBA source who I’ve known for a long time, he said the Dallas Mavericks and Anthony Davis, keep your eye on it.”

If the Mavs can't trade for one Lakers star, perhaps they can find a way to trade for the other one ... that is, if they think Davis is the right third star to fit with Luka Doncic and Irving.
