NBA Draft Rumor: Raptors Want Trade with Mavs?

As we count down the hours remaining until the NBA Draft begins on Thursday night, questions still remain about what the Dallas Mavericks will do with their No. 10 pick.

If Dallas chooses to trade the pick, it should have a wide variety of options to choose from. One of the latest rumors involves the Toronto Raptors being interested in acquiring the No. 10, and the Mavs could try to swing for the fences if that’s the case.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Fischer, who was a guest on the Ball Don’t Lie podcast, the Raptors have touched base with the Mavs, expressing their interest in trading for the pick.

Would the Raptors be willing to let go of O.G. Anunoby or Pascal Siakam in a hypothetical deal netting them the 10th pick? If the answer is “yes,” then Mavs GM Nico Harrison should proceed with doing business with Raptors GM Masai Ujiri. Siakam will be an unrestricted free agent next summer, and Anunoby will be as well if he declines his $19 million player option — and he most certainly will, as he’ll be due for a raise.

Out of the two, Siakam might be the more realistic option for the Mavs, as he’s four years older than Anunoby is at age 29. If the Raptors want to get what they can for the two-time All-Star and 2019 NBA champion before he could potentially leave them for nothing in free agency, the Mavs could present them with that opportunity. It all depends on how bad Toronto wants into the top-10 picks of this draft and how it feels about Siakam’s long-term future with the team.

In theory, the Mavs trading Tim Hardaway Jr., Davis Bertans, Josh Green and the No. 10 pick in exchange for Siakam and Christian Koloko could work. Knowing how the Raptors’ front office has a reputation for being hard to negotiate with, this might not work for them, but parting with one of their best players is likely the only way they’d get the No. 10 pick from Dallas.
