Trade Idea: Could Mavs Swing Deal for Thunder’s Josh Giddey?

In this story:
As the trade deadline nears, the Dallas Mavericks have been linked to several different teams and players in trade rumors, but one potential trade partner that hasn’t been considered yet is one Dallas struck a deal with on draft night last year: the Oklahoma City Thunder.
As good as the young Thunder are, they might have so much young talent stacked up that it could eventually lead to a roster crunch — which is a great problem to have. If/when that day actually comes, could the Mavs benefit from it? Here’s a hypothetical trade featuring two Australian national team teammates that we believe could work.
Mavs receive: Josh Giddey
Thunder receive: Josh Green, 2025 second-round pick (via TOR), 2028 second-round pick (via MIA)
Despite being a full-time starter for OKC, Giddey (24.8) has actually averaged less minutes per game than Green (26.8) has. Giddey is averaging 11.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 45.6 percent overall and 33.6 percent from deep.
If OKC believes that Giddey will command more than they’re willing to pay on his next contract, perhaps they’d be open to swapping him for Green, who is already signed to a three-year, $41 million contract extension that starts next season.
ESPN's Kendrick Perkins: 'Heat Need to Trade' Jimmy Butler: Should Mavs Inquire?
Green’s points (7.9), rebounds (3.1) and assists (2.6) are pretty much half of what Giddey averages, but Green has better efficiency, as he shoots 46.2 percent overall and 38.6 percent from deep.
It might be too early for OKC to pull the plug on Giddey right now, as the front office likely wants to see how its current group performs in the postseason before making some tough decisions. However, this could be an idea to keep tabs on later down the road.
