Nuggets Star Responds to Popular Criticism of His Game

In this story:
Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. is never afraid to shoot. While this sometimes results in questionable shot selection, the Porter recently addressed the criticism he receives for this during an episode of his podcast.
"I'm aware of the little Michael 'never swing the rock' Porter Jr.," he said. "To be completely honest, I'm one of the best shooters in the league, like humbly. I don't see contests. You might be watching me on TV, seeing me shoot a contested shot, but it doesn't feel contested to me... When I catch the ball, unless I'm crowded, it's probably going up."
Porter can certainly take some questionable shots, but he does have a point about his shooting ability. Big for his position, Porter also elevates more than other players on his jump shot, which leaves his release point far above where most defenders can reach. Because of this, even contested shots feel open for Porter, which is why he never hesitates to let it fly.
Another layer of this discussion, which Porter also addressed, is that his teammates want him to shoot the ball. Every player on an NBA team has a role, and with the Nuggets having high-level facilitators in Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, Porter is out there to shoot. While there are of course times to make the right play, Porter believes the right play is usually for him to put the shot up.
