The news comes just one day after Irving reportedly demanded a trade out of Brooklyn having been unable to agree to a contract extension with the Nets.
It's the first major deal ahead of the trade deadline this season and should be a harbinger of what's to come ahead of Feb. 9. With the Irving deal now finalized, all eyes will turn back to the Toronto Raptors who have three of the most valuable players on the trade block ahead of the deadline.
The Irving deal isn't likely to change much when it comes to Fred VanVleet's market. Dallas was not viewed as a potential landing spot for the Raptors' lead guard. Now, though, the pressure has increased for both Los Angeles teams to finalize a deal with Toronto to acquire a lead guard.
Gary Trent Jr. and O.G. Anunoby are the other two names the Raptors could move ahead of the deadline. Dallas is unlikely to deal for either of them, however, it's possible Brooklyn tries to pursue one of Toronto's core players by using that Mavericks' 2029 first-round pick in a deal.
