Fred VanVleet Feels 'Pressure' To Lead Young Rockets Following Free Agency Signing

During his guest appearance on the Pivot Podcast, Fred VanVleet was honest about the pressure he feels after signing with the Houston Rockets during free agency.

Houston Rockets veteran point guard Fred VanVleet joined Ryan Clark and Channing Crowder, hosts of the "Pivot Podcast" Friday afternoon. VanVleet discussed a variety of topics, from going undrafted in 2016 to his decision to sign with the Rockets during free agency.

During the interview, VanVleet revealed that getting a massive deal can put a lot of pressure on a player. But he believes that being with a new team and becoming a leader is also a great challenge.

"It's definitely a lot more pressure," VanVleet said. "Obviously, when you sign that dotted line you think nine figures is pressure. From a franchise, city and ownership standpoint, they're putting a lot of money behind me and what I'm able to contribute."

VanVleet thinks the Rockets have a bright future ahead, and he hopes the franchise can take advantage early.

"Being in the spot the team is in right now, I think is really only up from here," VanVleet said. "If you add to that, put some vets in there like we did with the young crew that they got, I'm excited about some of the things we'll be able to do.

"There's that sweet spot of trying to turn that young talent into something. One thing I'll be able to do is get the best out of my teammates."

The NBA All-Star and 2019 Champion looked back on his journey and was asked how much gratification he gave himself for affecting his family with his hard work.

"That's the ultimate pride," VanVleet said. "Really, the reason I do it is to take everybody along for the ride. This is what you think about in the backyard, counting down from five.

"We sit around in the basement watching ESPN and we still have all those memories. To see it unfold, I don't appreciate it enough because I'm focused on all the other things I want to continue to do. That's why I keep everybody close to me just to keep me grounded."

The former Toronto Raptors guard is heading into his eighth season in the league, but he's never led his team in points per game. VanVleet has high expectations to not only live up to his contract but lead the Rockets as well. However, he seems to be up to the challenge.
