In this story:

The Houston Rockets are two months away from training camp, but they may want to solidify Matthew Mayer's slot on the roster now before another team picks him up.

Mayer shot 43.5 percent from distance and averaged 12.5 points per game during his Summer League run, numbers that should jump off the page for inquiring NBA teams.

The Athletic's Sam Vecenie named Mayer to his All-Sickos team, a list of players who fell under-the-radar that deserve recognition.

"He’s not just some big lug roaming the 3-point line either; Mayer can handle the ball and move," Vecenie writes. "His college shooting numbers have never caught up to the eye test on his shot (33.9 percent from 3 career; 68.9 percent from the line), so this could be a fluky outlier week, but if Mayer can shoot consistently, there’s a place for him on a two-way at the very least."

Mayer entered the NBA at the right time, because the league opened an extra two-way roster spot for all 30 NBA teams, essentially creating 30 more jobs.

The Rockets have just one two-way spot available as Trevor Hudgins and Darius Days currently occupy two of the three contracts. If Houston doesn't offer him a deal, it's certainly possible for another team to step in.
