Chet Holmgren Rediscovering 3-Point Shot After Midseason Slump

Oklahoma City's rookie is draining 3-pointers at a high clip once again, and it looks like it's here to stay.

Chet Holmgren has had an impressive start to his NBA career. From game winners, to 30-point performances, to the Thunder’s rookie block record and much more. Holmgren was nearly an All-Star and was selected for the NBA’s Rising Stars game.

He has been critical to the Thunder’s success and has surpassed all expectations to this point. In total, Holmgren is averaging 16.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 53.6% shooting and 39.4% from 3-point range. Both marks are incredibly efficient, but for a point in time, Holmgren’s 3-point shooting was nearly over 50%. He was knocking down triples with the league’s best, and Oklahoma City’s offense was humming because of it.

His “Rookie Wall” stretch was greatly exaggerated, but his 3-point percentage suffered because of a cold month or two. In December, Holmgren shot 38.5% from downtown and in January it dipped to 34.8%. Both clips aren’t necessarily bad, but well below what the Thunder became accustomed to with the big man.

Recently, though, Holmgren’s shot has returned and his production is benefitting because of it. He’s averaging 17.5 points over the last six games and he’s knocked down 16-of-31 from 3-point range. His 51.6% mark from downtown is similar to his hot start to the season, and Oklahoma City’s offense is once again humming.

For the Thunder to reach its full potential, Holmgren’s 3-point shot is a key component. Especially if Oklahoma City continues running starting and closing lineups with Josh Giddey and Lu Dort, Holmgren’s outside shooting is absolutely critical. Opening up the floor for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams is critical for the team’s success, especially in the playoffs.

His ghost screens and quick pick-and-pops will keep defenses honest when overhelping on Gilgeous-Alexander's drives to the rim. Every bit of data the Thunder has received so far this year says the team is at its best when Holmgren is knocking down 3-pointers at a high clip.
