OKC Thunder Remain NBA’s Best 3-Point Shooting Team

Oklahoma City remains the most efficient team from beyond the arc nearly a quarter of the way through the season.

There’s been plenty of surprises already in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 2023-24 regular season.

Rookies Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace’s immediate assimilation, the team’s second-ranked net rating or that they’re the 2-seed in the Western Conference, all of which wasn’t expected prior to the season.

But nothing has been more surprising than the team’s sudden hot-streak from beyond the ever-important 3-point line.

Traditionally, Oklahoma City hasn’t worried about drafting shooters. Their recent philosophy has involved do-it-all players with length and versatility. And shooting fits into that, but it hasn’t been a staple of the franchises draft philosophy.

Even still, it appears OKC has left its last few drafts with threats when paired with their five-out, ball-moving system. Wallace is shooting 52.5% from three, Holmgren 39.5% and Jalen Williams 36%.

Another key to the 3-point puzzle has been Isaiah Joe, who signed with the Thunder last offseason and has quickly emerged as one of the best sharpshooters in the entire league.

On a whopping 5.9 attempts per game, Joe is hitting on a remarkable 46%, playing off stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and more with ease.

Oklahoma City's fiery perimeter shooting has caused them to be a fearsome Western Conference titan. They boast a top-five offensive rating, which when paired with their top-five defensive rating, typcially makes them a tough out nightly.

There's a chance, and potentially even a likelihood, that their shooting cools off in the near future. But if it happens to stick around for the foreseeable future, OKC may just do the same among the top of the NBA standings.
