Thunder Guard Josh Giddey to Show Growth as the Star in FIBA

Josh Giddey will have a chance to be the main ball handler and playmaker with Australia's national team during the World Cup.

Australia's national men's basketball team typically has a strong, talented roster that competes at the highest level in FIBA play. This World Cup, they'll be playing with Thunder guard Josh Giddey likely driving the ship.

For Australia, Giddey will be able to facilitate and set up the team's sharpshooters and keep the offensive pace high. On the other hand, Giddey will gain valuable experience. Playing alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giddey can sometimes be limited in the ability to be the main conductor, but he'll get a chance to show his capabilities in doing so during the World Cup.

While Giddey has been able to make a leap in the NBA and round out his game by improving his jump-shooting consistency, he was initially drafted because of his high IQ and elite playmaking. He'll be able to put that on display while representing his country.

Last season, the Thunder would stagger Giddey and Gilgeous-Alexander to maintain a consistent offensive flow. Giddey then was able to run his own lineup and unit on the floor. However, his growth playing alongside Gilgeous-Alexander improved over the course of the season.

Still, Giddey wasn't in the driver's seat enough to be able to realize the talent he has and how his skillset can benefit from being in that position. With the Boomers ready to make a FIBA World Cup run, Giddey could essentially determine the team's potential.

There are plenty of NBA talents on Australia's roster. Joe Ingles, who signed with the Magic this offseason, provides floor spacing and the ability to be a connector to ensure the offense maintains a steady flow. Patty Mills and Jock Landale both complement Giddey's game in different unique ways.

For Thunder fans craving basketball, watching Giddey make plays against high-level teams will be a fix in the near future and will show a glimpse of areas that Giddey has grown his game this offseason.
