NFL denies sending Donald Trump letter about debate schedule
After Donald Trump claimed to have received a letter from the NFL regarding the timing of the upcoming presidential debates, a spokesman said the league did nothing of the sort.
In discussing the fact that two of his three debates with Hillary Clinton will compete with NFL games this fall with ABC, Trump said that the league was not happy about it either, and that he had received a letter from them.
“I’ll tell you what I don’t like,” Trump said, “It’s against two NFL games. I got a letter from the NFL saying, ‘this is ridiculous.’”
Spokesman Brian McCarthy said while the NFL certainly wasn’t thrilled about the debate schedule, the league office did not send said letter.
“While we’d obviously wish the Debate Commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to Mr Trump,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter.
The debate schedule was set last September by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates. The first will take place on Sept. 26, which conflicts with Monday Night Football, the second is during Sunday Night Football on Oct. 9, and the final debate will air on Oct. 19, which is a Wednesday.
