As replay, and by extension all on-field officiating, becomes increasingly centralized in NFL headquarters, the league’s zebra czar gathers more influence and more public attention—whether he wants it or not. Dean Blandino, a former stand-up comic, often takes to Twitter to explain or clarify refereeing decisions, but as with the seemingly intractable catch rule, he’s finding that the more he tries to refine and perfect the rules, the more difficult the actual job of refereeing becomes. And it in the end, no one is ever satisfied.
