Broncos Getting PUP List Player Back Can Spark a Defensive Turnaround
The Denver Broncos defense is giving up an average of 462 yards per game and 38 points per game, ranking dead-last in the NFL. This is a far cry from the 2022 season when the Broncos finished at or near the top 10 in many defensive categories.
Part of the reason for the drastic drop-off is the hiring of Vance Joseph as defensive coordinator, former head coach of the Broncos. It appears that Joseph’s scheme, which is predicated on man coverage philosophies, and the personnel, are at odds.
Another reason for such a drop-off is the injuries to several defensive players. There are numerous instances on game day where Broncos players lack awareness in coverage and/or are missing defensive assignments.
On blitz packages, players are either getting to the quarterbacks late or not getting to them at all, thus leading to a very low pressure rate and sack total. Although getting these injured players back will help the Broncos to turn things around, there is one specific player that can change the dynamic of the defense: Baron Browning.
Browning started his Broncos career in 2021 at inside linebacker. His upside was evident. There were numerous plays where he showcased his athleticism, making the necessary tackles in space and running from one sideline to the next, cutting the run lane corners, and he was very solid in getting off blocks and penetrating the gap.
The Broncos moved Browning to outside linebacker in 2022, where he shined. He ended last season with 24 total tackles, five sacks, and an interception.
With Browning's play on the edge, Broncos fans saw the quick change in direction to burst to the ball. He also used his length to make attempts to force the ball out of the opponent's hands. Browning's instincts and versatility would be very valuable for a defense that is currently on life support.
Although the Broncos started Browning's clock this week, allowing him to practice as he works back from the PUP list, according to 9NEWS' Mike Klis, it's still unknown when fans can expect him to return to the field.
“Per source, OLB Baron Browning to be activated from PUP and start practicing this week," Klis tweeted on Wednesday. "Suffered meniscus tear during phase 2 of offseason program in May. Had surgery but coming along. Doubt he plays this week vs Jets. Still, another reason Gregory is expendable.”
With the release of Randy Gregory, Browning finds himself as one of the leaders in the Broncos rush linebacker room. Browning's leadership should be a great boon to the organization as the Broncos are now focusing on a youth movement going forward.
