Report: Davis Webb Joins Broncos as QB Coach
The Denver Broncos leaked a flurry of coaching hires Thursday, none more intriguing than the addition of former Bills and Giants signal-caller Davis Webb, tabbed as the new quarterbacks coach, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.
Part of the intrigue stems from Webb's suddenness in trading his helmet for a headset. The Texas Tech product — a 2017 third-round pick who completed 23 career passes — just spent last season, his second stint with Big Blue, backing up starter Daniel Jones.
On Jan. 23, Schefter reported that Webb, whom Buffalo wanted as their 2022 QB coach, would "consider making the jump to coaching for the right opportunity." Then Sean Payton's Broncos came calling.
Which is the other part; that Webb, 28, is six years younger than the quarterback — Russell Wilson — he's now tasked with tutoring. It's a bold arrangement, one few envisioned after Wilson's tumultuous maiden campaign in the Mile High City.
But one many believe he's suited for.
“He’s unbelievable with his teammates in terms of off the field, studying,” Bills HC Brian Daboll said last April. “He would meet with Josh (Allen) every Friday night and go through our call sheet and organize it. (He’s a) great sounding board and a really good competitor.”
Webb is among several ex-players on Payton's offensive staff, also featuring former Saints lineman Zach Strief as OL coach, former Broncos wideout Keary Colbert as receivers coach, and former Canadian Football League QB Logan Kilgore as quality control/passing game coordinator.
