Report: Broncos Interview Kris Richard for DC Opening

Another candidate enters the fray.

The Denver Broncos' slow-moving search for a defensive coordinator now includes a candidate familiar with both Sean Payton and Russell Wilson.

According to media reports, the Broncos recently interviewed Kris Richard, one of several names connected to the spot on Payton's staff.

A former Seahawks cornerback, Richard began his coaching career in Seattle, working up from assistant defensive backs coach in 2010 to coordinator in 2015 — and winning a Super Bowl (over the Broncos) along the way. His unit also twice ranked top five in scoring during that span.

Richard defected to the Dallas Cowboys in 2018, becoming DBs coach and passing game coordinator, before leaving for New Orleans in 2021. Last season, he was promoted to co-DC and secondary coach; the Saints finished second against the pass, fifth in total yards, and ninth in points allowed.

The 43-year-old is regarded as a strong communicator and poised instructor who once upon a time drew heavy consideration for head-coaching openings.

"My standard is that I want to be the best who’s ever done it,” Richard said in 2020.

In addition to Richard, the Broncos have interviewed Seahawks associate HC Sean Desai and former Jets and Bills coach Rex Ryan and requested a meeting with ex-Broncos HC and Cardinals DC Vance Joseph.

Ryan is "considered the favorite," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.
