Broncos Promote Pass-Rush Specialist Jamar Cain to DL Coach

Cain replaces Marcus Dixon, who defected to Minnesota.

The Denver Broncos filled the lone vacancy on its coaching staff, promoting pass-rush specialist Jamar Cain to defensive line coach, The Athletic's Bruce Feldman first reported Thursday. The team has since confirmed the move.

Cain replaces former DL boss Marcus Dixon, who left to take the same position with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month.

A longtime assistant in the college ranks, Cain was hired away from LSU in 2023 to spark Denver's edge-rushing corps — namely former second-round pick Nik Bonitto, whom Cain coached at Oklahoma. The addition paid immediate dividends as Bonitto finished second on the team with eight sacks, up from 1.5 the year prior.

"Coach Cain taught me a lot about the game and taught me a lot about what it means to be a good edge rusher and how to affect the quarterback, how to affect plays in the run game," Bonitto said after being drafted in 2022. "Just using my skill set to the best of my abilities. He taught me a lot of that."

Upon changing hats, Cain will have his work cut out with a Broncos line that last season accounted for just eight of the club's 42 sacks, five of which belonged to defensive end Zach Allen.

With starting nose tackle DJ Jones likely to be released and a massive question mark opposite Allen, bolstering this positional group is a chief priority for Denver — and Cain now will be at the center of it.
