"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."

That's how Charles Dickens' classic "A Tale of Two Cities" famously begins. These words, ironically, mirror the emotional spectrum experienced by many of the young Denver Broncos whose roster prospects are on the razor's edge entering training camp.

The thrill of being drafted by the historic franchise was likely one of their career highs. But the clock is ticking louder due to their lack of production. Under the scrutinizing gaze of new head coach Sean Payton, the Broncos have a trio of players teetering on the edge of retaining a spot on the roster.

Let's dive into a trio of 2020 draftees who might be looking over their shoulders this summer.

Lloyd Cushenberry III | C

Cushenberry's athleticism and ability to align the offensive line have been recognized. Despite his efforts to improve his strength, his performance on the field tells a tale of constant torment by physical defensive linemen.

With a run-blocking rating of 52.7 by Pro Football Focus last season (not good), he has a steep uphill climb ahead of him. Payton's blueprint rests on the foundation of a solid offensive line's interior push.

The presence of Luke Wattenberg, Alex Forsyth, and Kyle Fuller in camp threatens to heat the competition at the center. However, Cushenberry's established rapport with quarterback Russell Wilson might secure his place if he can demonstrate improved strength at the point of attack.

KJ Hamler | WR

Shifting the spotlight onto Hamler, his career seems to be overshadowed by a storyline of recurring injuries. Having managed only seven receptions for 165 yards with no touchdowns last season, his potential to stretch the field has been curtailed.

The Broncos' drafting Oklahoma speed demon Marvin Mims Jr. adds further uncertainty to Hamler's place. The fierce competition within the deepest position group on the team means that Hamler's odds are precariously low.

Albert Okwuegbunam | TE

Okwuegbunam's formidable size and speed should pose a matchup nightmare for any opponent. However, he must improve his inadequate blocking skills and inability to make contested catches.

While some of Okwuegbunam's struggles could be attributed to the previous staff's coaching, as a fourth-year tight end, his responsibility to enhance his performance rests squarely on his shoulders. A swarm of talent in the tight end room only adds to Albert O's challenges, necessitating an explosive start to the season if he wants to secure his spot.

Bottom Line

In the crucible of professional football, it's the survival of the fittest. For Cushenberry, Hamler, and Okwuegbunam, the upcoming season represents both an opportunity and a test.

Can they dig deep, pull out the stops, and prove their worth to Coach Payton and the Broncos franchise? Only time will tell whether this summer will indeed be "the best of times" or "the worst of times" for this trio.

Their time on the clock is now, and the entire Mile High City watches.
