Report: Broncos waive rookie QB Brett Rypien

The Denver Broncos really like Brett Rypien. But at this stage, the team apparently doesn't trust him to be the short-term backup QB to Joe Flacco.
Per Nicki Jhabvala of the Athletic, the Broncos are waiving Rypien. However, according to Jhabvala, the team hopes Rypien clears waivers so that he can be re-signed to the practice squad.
Offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello admired Rypien's four-year body of work at Boise State. While Rypien isn't the 'toolsiest' QB, he does possess some athleticism, but it's what's between his ears that the Broncos covet.
It'll take time to unify that football IQ with what it takes to succeed in the NFL. Rypien simply isn't there yet.
On the heels of releasing Kevin Hogan, waiving Rypien ensures that Denver will have to add an outside QB within the next 24-48 hours.
There has been buzz tying the Broncos to the recently released veteran Brian Hoyer and one report.
Other QBs have been released around the NFL, like Cardale Jones, and the San Francisco 49ers' QB situation is being closely monitored by the Broncos because of Scangarello's past ties and comfortability to C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens.
As for Rypien, he appeared in three preseason games this summer, going 27-of-44 (61.4%) for 207 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. I doubt it was a body of work good enough to entice an outside NFL team to claim him off waivers. But you never know.
At least Rypien will have his $146K in guaranteed money to console him while his future is up in the air.
