Cleveland Browns are presented another opportunity to address defensive tackle depth in Mike Daniels

The Cleveland Browns have another opportunity to address their defensive tackle depth with the news the Green Bay Packers have opted to release Mike Daniels. After missing out on McCoy with rather tepid interest, it will be interesting to see how much they are willing to bid for Daniels, whom much of the front office is more familiar.

The Green Bay Packers have opted to release Mike Daniels in an effort to save a little over $8 million. The Cleveland Browns still have a precarious situation with their defensive tackle depth, opted to bid low on Gerald McCoy and lost out on him to the Carolina Panthers. Eliot Wolf, Alonzo Highsmith, among others have familiarity with Daniels from their time in Green Bay, so that might help them in negotiations.

The Browns are among the natural destinations that Daniels could end up playing. And Daniels is coming off of a great season, is 30 years old, and would fit nicely in the Browns short term future. He's a player that can win against both single and double teams, offers versatility and generates pressure.

Much like with McCoy, he's probably better suited to be the third guy, but they can certainly roll with the hot hand in that scenario. Daniels, like Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi, are players that cause disruption and create opportunities for teammates.

One can't help but wonder if the Browns low-balled McCoy in part because they had an inkling this might be coming down the pike. It seems unlikely the Browns will break for the bank to get Daniels, but it may say a great deal if their offer is more competitive this time around.

Backup defensive tackle is one of the lingering question marks on this team, and maybe the guys they have in house can improve, but Daniels is a proven commodity that would give the Browns a potent six man rotation that can keep bringing pressure all game long.

The Browns are in the driver's seat with Daniels as they were with McCoy, but it all depends on just how badly they want him.
