The Cleveland Browns came away from the season opener with a very impressive 24-3 win against the defending AFC North champion Cincinnati Bengals. While the offense made just enough plays to put  points on the board with a grinding performance in inclement weather, it was the defense who put in the dominant performance to seal the victory.

The Bengals looked outmatched on offense against a revamped Browns defense that we were able to witness for a full game for the very first time. The entire defense played fast and looked as if they could win their one on one matchups at will. The defensive line was physically strong at the point of attack and the defensive backs didn't allow the Bengals star receivers many opportunities to make plays on the ball.

Joe Burrow was under pressure all day and took sacks and hits in the pocket. The NFL's new highest paid player was also impacted by the wet field conditions. He finished the game with only 82 yards after completing 14/31 of his pass attempts. Myles Garrett lined up all across the defensive front and ended up with one recorded sack and 4 quarterback hits.

After the game, Head Coach Kevin Stefanski awarded new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz with the game ball for the performance put in by his unit. His defense only allowed 143 yards total on the day and held the Bengals to only 2-15 on third down attempts.

The secondary receives credit for their play as well. Martin Emerson, Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome made life tough on what is widely considered the best receiver group in the league. Emerson was largely responsible for not allowing Tee Higgins a single reception in the game. On the other side Jamar Chase was only able to manage 39 yards on 5 catches.

It is just one week but the style of play quickly reminds you of elite defenses that we have seen in this division in the past. Everyone in the AFC North should take notice and respect who could turn out to be the new bully on the block.
