The backup quarterback position has been a discussion in Cleveland because the Browns appear poised to keep three as the NFL is changing the rules to be more favorable for teams on gameday, allowing them to activate another position player elsewhere. But if Deshaun Watson is forced to miss time, whether it's a series, a game or more, theMMQB's Matt Verderame ranked the Browns 19th in the NFL with Joshua Dobbs.

On the one hand, this doesn't seem terrible. There are 13 teams with a backup quarterback projected to be worse than Dobbs. The Browns aren't paying him much and he's valuable both in the quarterback meeting room and an extra set of eyes for Deshaun Watson on gameday, but he's also a great example for rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the quarterback the Browns selected out of UCLA in the fifth-round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Dobbs lost the two games he started for the Tennessee Titans last year, but the Titans had some of the worst offensive weapons in the league. He didn't elevate the talent around him, but Dobbs was functional in that role. The hope is that if he were forced to play, the talent on the Browns offense including Amari Cooper, David Njoku, Elijah Moore and Donovan Peoples-Jones along with Nick Chubb in the backfield could keep him afloat.

On the other hand, when looking at the quarterbacks who are ranked behind Dobbs, it's not as impressive. Four rookies make the list including one who's not expected to play this year.

A total of four former Browns are on this list for various teams. Jacoby Brissett, now a member of the Washington Commanders, is ranked second. He is going to be competing for the starting job along with Sam Howell. Brian Hoyer, now with the Las Vegas Raiders, Nick Mullens with the Minnesota Vikings and Tyrod Taylor, who is the backup for Daniel Jones in New York.
