Freddie Kitchens trying to get more out of his offensive line, still hoping someone will take the right guard job

Freddie Kitchens continues to rotate offensive linemen in an attempt to get more out of the group for the Cleveland Browns. The focus is on right guard but Kendall Lamm also took some starting reps at right tackle.

The Cleveland Browns right guard position continues to be up in the air. Although Eric Kush appears to be the front runner to win the job, it hasn't been decided and whenever Freddie Kitchens talks about it, he talks in terms of someone taking the job. That hasn't happened yet.

Kush continues to get the most reps with the ones. Austin Corbett appears to be all but entrenched as the backup center, which isn't ideal. Now, rookie Drew Forbes is getting some reps with the ones. And that may be more of a measuring stick for him to see just where he's at, but if he can make the most of those reps, he may find more opportunities.

Forbes is a phenomenal athlete with power and a mean streak. He just hasn't played against anywhere close to this level of competition, so it's about technique and consistency with him.

It's also worth noting that Kendall Lamm got some reps with the ones at right tackle. Chris Hubbard hasn't really been challenged to this point but whether it's just getting a sense of how Lamm would perform if he's pressed into duty or a legitimate challenge, the other benefit is that it likely further motivates Hubbard.

It would certainly be preferable if the Browns were totally set on their starting offensive line at this point, but it's not the end of the world either. This is nothing like last year where Hue Jackson decided to put Joel Bitonio at left tackle only to move him back to guard and put in Desmond Harrison, who barely practiced and got zero reps with the ones in preseason.

Lamm's situation may be more of a way to give Hubbard a lighter day and get the next man up some reps with the ones than a meaningful challenge, although Lamm did perform better last year for the Houston Texans than Hubbard did for the Browns.

The right tackle situation is of far less concern than right guard. Eric Kush continues to be the baseline, who is a pretty solid pass protector and an underwhelming run blocker. The Browns would love nothing more than someone else to come in and take that from him over the next few weeks, which is likely why Kitchens keeps talking in terms of someone taking the job.

If Kush can step his game up, he might well take it. He's not a bad lineman by any stretch. The Browns aren't in trouble if Kush plays. That doesn't change the fact that if Kush doesn't get better and wins the job, it will feel like the team is settling, which is a little disappointing. There's no question the Browns came into this season hoping for a different result and to this point, aren't getting it.
