Cleveland Browns: Is Austin Seibert making his move?

After initially looking like a disaster of a draft pick, Cleveland Browns kicker Austin Seibert has quietly been putting together a number of good practices in a row. If he continues, he could make a move to unseat Greg Joseph for the kicker job.

Cleveland Browns: Is Austin Seibert making his move?

Don't look now but Cleveland Browns kicker Austin Seibert has quietly been putting together a string of good practices and yesterday he was a perfect 5 for 5 on field goals. Seibert came into OTAs and the start of training camp so badly that Dustin Fox tweeted that he looked like a high school kicker and Seibert was soundly booed in the Orange and Brown scrimmage. I don't love the idea of fans booing their own players in a practice, but at the time he was performing that badly.

To this point, Seibert hasn't had a day where he's bested incumbent kicker Greg Joseph, but he is at least providing meaningful competition, which is a massive improvement from where he was a few weeks ago.

With three weeks to go and considering his draft position, if Seibert can keep improving, he's going to get every opportunity to win this job. Having said that, Greg Joseph has been largely steady almost all camp.

If the Browns are satisfied that their kicker for the 2019 season is in the building this has gone from a foregone conclusion that Seibert would win the job when he was drafted to wondering if Seibert would be cut to get better competition to now it might come down to the wire as to which kicker will win.

It's a testament to Seibert's mental toughness that he's been able to ignore the noise and keep working to get to a point where he's in a position to potentially win the job. At the very least, it would be good for the Browns to be picking between two effective kickers as opposed to the lesser of two evils.
