Wilkins (6’ 1”, 216 LBs) is a former 5th round pick in 2018, who played in college at Mississippi. Wilkins has rushed for 1,009 yards and 4 touchdowns, and has 41 receptions for a total of 262 yards over his first five seasons. He is an older veteran who would be able to hit the ground running and even play snaps as soon as Friday night against the Commanders.
The Browns who have recently been hit hard with injuries, are thin at the running back position after Jerome Ford went down in Monday’s practice with a hamstring injury. The team hasn’t disclosed the severity of the injury but the expectation is that he will be out several weeks and will hopefully have him back by the season opener.
With Ford out and starting running back Nick Chubb on ice until games count, the team needs to add a running back to take handoffs for the three remaining preseason games. The depth behind Ford includes John Kelly Jr., Demetric Felton and undrafted rookie Hassan Hall. You can expect to see a lot of all three backs on Friday evening.
Often times, when the Browns work out one player, they work multiple guys out together, so its probable that they are looking at other running backs today as well. We will be keeping an eye out of any additional workouts being reported and let you know when they make the expected signing.
