Baltimore Ravens Bring In Former Buccaneers Running Back For Try Out

The former Buccaneer is hoping to impress the Ravens enough to earn a contract.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had high hopes for sixth-year running back Ronald Jones when they selected him in the second round back in 2018. Unfortunately, Jones wasn't able to provide the consistency that the franchise anticipated as he struggled with injuries and turnover woes.

Since departing from the franchise following the conclusion of the 2021 season, Jones has yet to nab a significant role elsewhere. He only had 17 attempts in six games last year for the Kansas City Chiefs, being a member of his second Super Bowl winning team. Jones signed with the Dallas Cowboys over the offseason but was suspended for two games over the summer for violating the NFL's PED policy.

After sitting out in the Cowboys' first two victories to begin the year, the team chose to release Jones earlier this week. Back on the free agent market, he's already fielding interest from at least one club as he tries to keep his professional dream afloat.

The Baltimore Ravens are exploring their options in the backfield after losing J.K. Dobbins to an Achilles injury during the opening week of the season. According to The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec, the Ravens are working out a trio of veteran running backs on Wednesday that includes former Buccaneer Ronald Jones. The team is also bringing in former Raven Kenyon Drake and former Jaguar James Robinson.

Baltimore could use extra depth at the position with Justice Hill and Gus Edwards as the only active running backs on the 53-man roster. Any of the three names mentioned above could fill the gap in the short term with their success around the league.

Jones's best season at the professional level came in 2020 when Tampa Bay went on a run to win Super Bowl LV. He rushed 192 times for 978 yards and seven rushing touchdowns while catching 28 passes for 165 yards and another score. He totaled 505 attempts for 2,244 yards and 19 touchdowns during his time with the Buccaneers.
