Cowboys Cut Michael Gallup Visits Carolina Panthers; Could Dallas Re-Sign?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys long ago cemented in their plan to say goodbye to receiver Michael Gallup, who had been granted permission to seek his own trade ... and who is now off the roster by virtue of his Friday release.

And maybe Gallup has already found himself a suitor. … with the possibility too that Dallas might take a future second look at him as well.

Nov 12, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup (13) makes a catch over New York Giants cornerback Darnay Holmes (30) during the second half at AT&T Stadium

Gallup experienced a breakout year in his second season of 2019, with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards. But he tore his ACL in 2021, and even with the injury Dallas gave him a five-year, $57.5 million contract - a move that did not work out.

The third-round draft pick from 2018 has experienced a drastic decline in production, as last season he had career-lows in yards (418) and touchdowns (two) and the second-fewest catches (34).

Gallup was to have a cap hit of $13.85 million for 2024. A trade wouldn’t actually have providing much relief there. A post-June 1 designated release instead has given Dallas $9.5 million in 2024 cap space at that time, with the impact spread over two years.

Gallup's search for a new team at one point piqued the interest of the Carolina Panthers, though given the hard numbers - the idea of Carolina picking up Gallup's salary, plus Dallas saving so little, plus MG's lack of production - we were skeptical about any team wishing to sacrifice anything for the player, knowing he's on the verge of being cut.

But now that he’s on the street? NFL Network is reporting that he’s scheduling a visit with the Panthers. And depending on what offers he does/doesn’t get?

Maybe the Cowboys - obsessed with their frugal one-year offers - might circle back to good-soldier Gallup ... someday bringing him back under the terms of a new, cheap deal.
